Octavio, how did you get into engineering?

My interest in engineering came up during high school, at the time where I started discovering the wonders of internet and programming languages. This was during the 90’s so internet was a new thing and not everyone had access to it yet.

When did you know that this was what you wanted to do?

Not at all. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a doctor, like my father, but then I realised it was not quite what I wanted. As I have enjoyed drawing my whole life, and have an interest in art, architecture came up as a strong career option for me. My older brother is an architect, and I thought this could be a great choice for me.

Computer science is what I chose, which was kind of a new career path that was starting to gain popularity. It also matched my interest in technology, but I did however at the time have many doubts about it.

I grew up in Acapulco, Mexico, surrounded by palm trees and warm weather year-round. In a city with no other industry than tourism, it was difficult to meet someone with a successful background in computer science, so I needed to look elsewhere for my own path.

I am no longer doubtful that Computer Science was the right choice for me as I really enjoy all the challenges and opportunities that engineering provides. and I see myself doing this for many years.

Being from Mexico, how did you end up Norway?

I moved to Norway in May 2008. The year before, I met a Norwegian girl that was an exchange student in Mexico. She convinced me to move to the “best country in the world”. She is now my wife and the mother of my two kids. She has been a great help to integrate myself into the Norwegian society and in understanding the Norwegian culture and language.

What motivates you?

At work, what motivates me the most is taking on new challenges and keep learning. I also think a good working atmosphere, a good working culture and a good manager is very important as these factors can impact the level of motivation of the people around. What keeps me motivated daily is having a balanced work-family-personal life. I perform best ,both at work and at home, when I manage to take care of what I think are the most important things, and that is what makes me happy too.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently developing a Bluetooth Mesh controller that is part of a large in-house R&D project for a customer in the automotive industry.

Why would you recommend someone to work at Data Respons Solutions?

What I like the most about working in Data Respons Solutions is the variation in projects and technology. On my first project, for example, I developed both Linux device drivers and FPGA Firmware, and now I am working on a Bluetooth module.

There is always something new to learn, and the project assignments give a good sense of ownership and responsibility. You could be working on a project together with people based in the same office or in another country, and at the same time helping a colleague test for another project. No time to be bored!

Working at the Høvik office has also made my life easier and I only use 10 minutes by bicycle or car. If I wake up early enough, I have time to work out, get to work, and pick up the kids at the kindergarten without a problem.

Data Respons Solutions is a solid and established company, with routines in place to make sure the workplace stays attractive for its employees. There is a good working culture and respect for its employees. This helps employees to do a better job.

There are also different sport and social activities that help getting to know colleagues a bit better and build a closer relationship, which in turn makes collaboration much easier.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

I like camping in the woods with the family. This has become a frequent and fun activity during the pandemic. I also train CrossFit a few times a week to stay active and healthy. And, if I ever get any time to sit down and relax, I really enjoy drawing. Portrait drawing is something I would like to get better at, although nowadays I, for the most, draw dinosaurs, Spiderman, ponies, or whatever characters my kids find cool.
